Brancusi | SHUN OKUBO
One of SHUN OKUBO’s classic items is a ring named BRANCUSI.
The ring is inspired by the work of Constantin Brancusi, a sculptor who once worked in Paris. I first became interested in becoming a jewellery designer because I wondered if it was possible to create an abstract sculpture like Brancusi’s in a size that could be worn on the body. I was curious about the possibility of making abstract sculptures like Brancusi’s in a size that could be worn on the body. For example, there is a representative work by Brancusi called Bird in space, which is said to be an abstract sculpture of a bird in flight. However, in this work, Brancusi is said to have said that it was “not an abstraction but a figurative expression of essence”.
I should also note that this ring was designed by a friend of mine who ordered a ring from me when I was a fledgling jewellery designer, and who wanted a ring like noguchi… I think there is another brand called noguchi, but at first I wondered what he was talking about, and then it turned out that the noguchi he was referring to was actually Isamu Noguchi! I wondered what he was talking about at first! Isamu Noguchi was actually a disciple of Brancusi, an order that coincidentally forms the basis of my jewellery design (incidentally, Brancusi was a disciple of Auguste Rodin, famous for The Thinker and The Gates of Hell). My favourite artists are connected). (By the way, Brancusi was a student of Auguste Rodin, famous for “The Thinker” and “The Gates of Hell”.
The Brancusi ring by SHUN OKUBO was born along these lines, and in other words, the form of this ring was influenced by the pursuit of pure form, which is the essence of Brancusi’s work. In the case of this ring, I think the essence I was trying to capture was the fusion of the organic plasticity of the body and the inorganic plasticity of metal. The design was my way of expressing the homage and mystery of Brancusi’s work.
And I dare say that there was a longing for an “artist’s family” at that time.
I would be more than happy if I could share the history and spirit of such a “family of artists” with the customers who choose and wear this ring.

SHUN OKUBOの定番のアイテムにBRANCUSIと名付けられたリングがあります。
このリングは、かつてパリで活躍した彫刻家のコンスタンティン・ブランクーシの作品からインスパイアされたものです。そもそも、私がジュエリーデザイナーに興味を持ったのは、ブランクーシのような抽象彫刻を身体に身につけられるサイズで作ることは可能だろうか？という好奇心が始まりでした。例えば、『空間の鳥』(Bird in space)というブランクーシの代表作品がありますが、鳥が飛翔する姿を抽象的な彫刻に落とし込んだ作品、と言われています。しかしながら、この作品においてブランクーシは「抽象ではなく本質を表現した具象だ」と語っていたそうですが。

また、このリングは、駆け出しのジュエリーデザイナーだった私にリングを注文くれた友人の「noguchiのようなリングを…」という希望から生まれたデザインであることも書き留めて置かなければなりません。noguchi、という他社ブランドもあるような気がしますが、初めはなんのことだろうと思っていたところ、彼が言っていたnoguchiは実はIsamu Noguchiのことだと途中から判明しました！実はイサム・ノグチはブランクーシの弟子であり、偶然にも私のジュエリーデザインの根幹に関わるオーダーでありました（ちなみに、ブランクーシは『考える人』や『地獄の門』で有名な、オーギュスト・ロダンの弟子です。私の好きな芸術家たちは繋がっていきます。）。
さて、このような流れで生まれたSHUN OKUBOのBrancusiリングですが、このリングのフォルムは言い換えるとBrancusiの作品の本質である「純粋なフォルムを追求すること」に影響を受けたものであると言えます。このリングの場合、私が捉えようとした本質は身体の有機的な可塑性、金属の無機物としての可塑性の融合であったように思っています。そこにブランクーシへ作品のオマージュと神秘を私なりに表現したデザインでした。
そして敢えて言うならば”芸術家の家族”への憧れ、がその時あったように思います。
このリングをお選びになり、身につけてくださるお客様と、そのような”芸術家の家族”の歴史とエスプリを共有させてもらえたら、デザイナーとしてこれ以上の喜びはありません。
