“Weaving light, an ultra-fine poem.”
An 18K ball chain, cut and endlessly sparkling.
Before designing this Cluster series, I thought that if I could combine this ball chain like a bunch, I might even be able to paint a picture.
When designing jewelry, I first spend days imagining the finished piece in my mind.
Only when it takes shape and feels fully conceived do I begin the actual making.
In truth, 70% of the design is complete in my imagination. The remaining 30% involves working with artisans to refine it—ensuring structural integrity, preventing injury, avoiding fragility, and addressing various constraints.
When creating the Cluster series, I recall that 30% was almost nonexistent. What I envisioned in my mind became the finished piece.
This owes much to the exceptional engineering skills of the artisans we collaborate with, but intuitively, I felt that combining balls of about 1.0mm in diameter
meant any form could be expressed.
The first shape that came to mind was the form of the earring called Flag.
As the ball chain is arranged, the linear chain becomes a surface.
It resembles woven fabric, appearing like a supple gold flag.
Furthermore, by soldering the ends of the ball chain to create rigid straight sections,
and using these as the earring posts, a completely minimal item using only ball chain was completed.
This technique of solidifying chains was introduced in SHUN OKUBO’s early collections,
and when I tried it with ball chains this time, it worked exceptionally well.
Furthermore, on necklaces and bracelets, the overlapping ball chains took on the role of a top charm.
In the necklace named “Tie,” the lengths of the two chains hanging from the top were varied,
recreating the silhouette of classical high jewelry.
Though ball chains possess a rugged quality, the reflections created by the cuts
bring out the gold’s brilliance and sparkle.
Furthermore, its minimalist air allows for the construction of a design that is utterly contemporary.
A design poetic as if weaving light, yet possessing a concreteness like pixels on a screen.
SHUN OKUBO’s “Cluster” has been released as a new collection embodying the brand’s appeal.

“光を編む、極細の詩。”
“Cluster”とは日本語で房を意味する。
カットの入った絶え間なくキラキラと輝く18Kのボールチェーン。
このClusterシリーズをデザインする前、このボールチェーンを房のように組み合わせれば絵画すら描けるのではないか、と思ったものだ。
わたしはジュエリーのデザインをするときに、まずは日々頭の中でずっとその出来上がりを想像している、それが形になり着地できると、ある程度考え抜かれたとき、実際作ってみる作業に入る。実際、想像だけでデザインは70%は完成しており、残りの30%は、プロダクトとして構造的に成立するか、怪我はしないか、壊れやすくないか、など、さまざまな制約などで職人と共に修正がなされる。Clusterシリーズを製作するにあたっては、ほとんどその30%がなかったように記憶している。ほぼ、頭の中で思い浮かんだものが形になった。これは我々が協働している職人たちの高いエンジニアリングによるところも多いけれど、１ピースが約1.0mmのボールを組み合わせる、ということはどんな造形も表現できると直感的に思った。
はじめに思い浮かんだのはFlagと呼ばれるピアスの形だった。
ボールチェーンを並べていくと、線としてのチェーンが面となる。
まるで編まれた布のようでもあり、それはしなやかなゴールドの旗のように見える。また、ボールチェーンの先端をロウ付（溶接）することで直線の硬質な部分を作り、それをピアスのポストとすることでボールチェーンしか使用していない完全にミニマルなアイテムが完成した。このチェーンを固める手法は、SHUN OKUBOの初期のコレクションで発表しており、今回ボールチェーンを固めてみたのだが、非常にうまくいった。また、ネックレスやブレスレットにでは、ボールチェーンの重なりがトップのチャームのような役割を得た。
Tieと名付けられたネックレスでは、トップに2本垂れ下がったチェーンの先端の長さを変え、古典的なハイジュエリーのシルエットが再現されている。ボールチェーンは無骨な雰囲気があるが、そこにカットが入ることによって起こる反射によって、ゴールドの華やかさ、煌びやかさが立ち上がってくる。さらにそのミニマルな空気感はこれ以上なく現代的なデザインを構築することができる。まるで光を編むように詩的であり且つ画面のピクセルのような具体性を孕むデザイン。SHUN OKUBOの”Cluster”はブランドの魅力を体現する新しいコレクションとしてリリースされました。
